Revised Cell Phone and Electronic Device Policy Effective 2022-2023 School Year

Accomack County Public Schools recognizes that cell phones are an integral part of communication between our students and families. Therefore, we have made the following amendments to our cell phone policy to meet the needs of our student body and curtail the cell phone related distractions to the learning environment and any subsequent disciplinary actions and disruptions.

Students are permitted to use their cell phones/devices before and after the instructional day, in the hallways during class changes, and in the cafeteria during lunch. This includes wearable smart technology. While in the classrooms and during instruction, cell phones or other electronic devices must be stored in the student’s book bag or locker and in the OFF position.

Prior to returning the electronic device, it is important that you understand the consequences that will be given for violating the electronic device policy. If a student is using their cell phone while in class, the following consequences will be given:

1. First Infraction – Confiscation of electronic device. Administrator/Student conference with electronic device being returned to student at the end of the school day. Parent contact made by teacher.

2. Second Infraction – Confiscation of electronic device. Administrator/Student conference with electronic device being returned to parent at the end of the school day (after bus dismissal). Parent/student will be notified of subsequent consequences for electronic device policy violation by office personnel.

3. Third Infraction – Student will receive an OSS for 1 day and Confiscation of Device. The electronic device will be returned to parent at the end of day (after bus dismissal). The student may be asked to not bring their device back for a certain amount of time, pending review by administration.

4. All Subsequent Violations will result in upwards of 3 days Out of School Suspension.

Students who utilize devices for the purposes of “live-streaming”, photographing/videoing other students or faculty INCLUDING peer fights on school property will be subject to disciplinary actions, which can include ISS or OSS.

Defiant students refusing to give their electronic device to a teacher or administrator will receive an automatic 3 day Out of School Suspension.

**Accomack County Public Schools personnel assume no responsibility in any circumstance for bills for cell phones or other electronic devices, or any damage/theft of student device.
