The month of July has concluded, and soon children will return to school as cooler weather approaches. This month's e-newsletter provides updates on the Virginia Military Survivors & Dependents Education Program (VMSDEP) and details about the upcoming sales tax holiday. Additionally, a few recent news articles are included for your interest.

Previously, several updates were shared regarding VMSDEP. Established in the 1930s, this program offers tuition assistance for disabled World War I veterans and the children of those killed in action during the war. A similar initiative exists for the children of first responders who died in the line of duty.

Recent state budget changes to VMSDEP eligibility requirements faced opposition from veteran and Gold Star families. However, following political negotiations, the House and Senate passed HB6004 to repeal these changes fully. The bill also allocates surplus revenues to ensure proper funding for VMSDEP. "I was proud to serve as a chief co-patron for this bill," stated Mike Cherry, highlighting bipartisan efforts.

Concerns about the program's long-term viability persist, with workgroups scheduled to meet this summer and fall to examine potential future changes. Any modifications must undergo a transparent legislative process rather than being rushed through budget adjustments.

Virginia’s annual sales tax holiday will occur from August 2-4. During this period, school supplies, clothing, footwear, emergency preparedness items, and energy-efficient appliances can be purchased tax-free. The holiday includes:

- Qualified school supplies priced at $20 or less per item

- Portable generators priced at $1,000 or less per item

- Gas-powered chainsaws priced at $350 or less per item

- Chainsaw accessories priced at $60 or less per item

- Other specified hurricane preparedness items priced at $60 or less per item

- Qualifying Energy Star™ or WaterSense™ products purchased for noncommercial home or personal use priced at $2,500 or less per item

More information is available on the Department of Taxation’s website.

July began with Independence Day celebrations in Chesterfield during The Highland’s annual parade. Over the summer months, there has been support for the Tri-City Chili Peppers baseball team in Colonial Heights. This season featured a unique Cosmic Baseball game event.
