Delegate Mike Cherry has issued a statement regarding House Bill 2232, addressing recent discussions and concerns. The bill, which has attracted attention in recent days, was not intended to divert revenue from Petersburg but aimed at benefiting the entire region.
Cherry expressed disappointment over public discussions where city officials resorted to name-calling. He emphasized that "the residents of Petersburg deserve so much better from their government."
The delegate highlighted that revenue sharing was part of the discussion surrounding the Petersburg casino project. This aspect influenced his decision to support the bill authorizing last November's referendum. Although conversations paused after Election Day, Cherry is pleased that regional leaders are revisiting this important issue.
He hopes these discussions will focus on accountability rather than solely on revenue sharing. Cherry stated, "Contingent upon a meeting of city and county officials taking place on Thursday, I am prepared to withdraw HB 2232 from consideration this legislative session." He hopes for productive talks leading to a stronger and more stable Petersburg without resorting to name-calling.
