As the year draws to a close, Delegate Mike Cherry has shared his reflections and anticipations for 2025. "Looking back, there is much to be thankful for!" he expressed, noting personal milestones including family expansions and engagements.
Cherry's update provides insights into the upcoming Virginia General Assembly session scheduled to commence on January 8, 2025. This regular legislative session will span 46 days, during which numerous bills and amendments to the biennial budget will be reviewed by both the House and Senate.
In preparation for this session, Governor of Virginia introduced proposed amendments to the state budget earlier in December. Cherry mentioned that these proposals would serve as a foundation for further legislative development. The money committees in both chambers will utilize these suggestions to draft their own amendments before reaching a consensus on a final package for gubernatorial approval or revision.
Legislators have already begun submitting bills ahead of the session. Cherry himself has introduced two bills (HB1563 and HB1564) aimed at enhancing retirement benefits for 911 dispatchers by reclassifying them from administrative assistants to first responders. This change seeks to acknowledge their contributions and address recruitment challenges in certain areas of Virginia.
To gauge public opinion on key issues likely to arise during the legislative session, Cherry has launched an eight-question survey available online. He encourages constituents to share their views on matters not covered in the survey through email or letter correspondence.
Cherry remains accessible during the session via phone at (804) 698-1074 or email at DelMCherry@house.virginia.gov. Letters can be sent to PO Box 1146, Colonial Heights, VA 23834.
He assures continued weekly updates throughout the legislative period and invites constituents with questions about pending legislation or state agency concerns to reach out for assistance.
"As always," Cherry concludes, "it remains an honor to represent you and your family in the Virginia House of Delegates."
