The General Assembly convened in Richmond for the Reconvene Session, also known as the Veto Session, as mandated by the state constitution. This session focused on reviewing the actions taken by the Governor on bills. Providing an overview, Delegate Mike Cherry shared insights on the legislative proceedings in a recent e-newsletter.
Regarding the state budget, Delegate Cherry discussed the differing tax proposals by Governor Youngkin and legislative Democrats, highlighting the variance in their approaches. Despite initial discrepancies, efforts are being made to reach a consensus. An upcoming special session has been scheduled to further deliberate on the budget, with a vote expected in May.
Governor Youngkin's veto of 153 bills faced no override attempts, given the political landscape. Amendments proposed by the Governor, including those related to skill games, stirred considerable debate. The issue of taxing and regulating skill games, along with zoning restrictions proposed by Governor Youngkin, remains a topic of interest for continued observation.
Delegate Cherry concluded the update, expressing his commitment to serving the community and welcoming any inquiries. The email newsletter aimed to provide clarity and awareness on the recent legislative developments.
If you have any questions, please let me know. It remains an honor to represent our community in the House of Delegates.
Sincerely,
Mike Cherry
