The General Assembly has officially finished its 60-day legislative session having adjourned sine die on Saturday, March 9th. Delegate Mike Cherry provided insights into the recently concluded session, highlighting legislative accomplishments and key issues.

Regarding the legislative session, Delegate Cherry stated, "The Governor has already signed 64 bills into law and vetoed 8 bills." He also emphasized the importance of the Governor's role in the legislative process, noting that amendments proposed by the Governor must be reviewed by the General Assembly before becoming law. The deadline for the Governor to act on bills is April 8th, with a reconvene session scheduled for April 17th to address any veto overrides or amendments.

Addressing specific legislative matters, Delegate Cherry discussed the proposal for a professional sports stadium in Alexandria. He mentioned, "Ultimately, the stadium proposal did not pass the legislature this session." Although the proposal did not advance in the Senate, Delegate Cherry expressed concerns about the potential impact on Virginia's reputation in terms of business dealings.

On the topic of legalizing skill games, Delegate Cherry highlighted the passage of the Senate bill while expressing his reservations about the lack of local input in the decision-making process. He anticipated further debates on this issue in the future.

Regarding the legalization of recreational marijuana, Delegate Cherry acknowledged the passage of House Bill 698 in both chambers despite his opposition. He noted constituents' concerns about legalized marijuana sales and the federal legality of marijuana as factors in his decision.

In terms of the state budget, Delegate Cherry raised concerns about the budget proposed by legislative Democrats, which includes tax increases and cuts in funding for various programs. He noted, "Raising taxes will not make it easier for families." Despite appreciating certain aspects of the budget, Delegate Cherry voted against it due to the tax increases.

Looking ahead, Delegate Cherry mentioned upcoming public budget hearings in Chesterfield County and indicated that he would transition his weekly updates to monthly updates while the House is not in session. He encouraged constituents to reach out if they need assistance.
