Proposed Surplus Personal Property Tax Refund

Proposed Surplus Personal Property Tax Refund

At their December meeting, the Board of Supervisors voted to begin the process of a partial refund of a Personal Property Tax surplus on many classes of vehicles.  According to statute, the Board must enact an ordinance to refund a personal property tax surplus.  This requires publication in the local paper and public comment before approval.  In December's Board meeting, the Board of Supervisors authorized the development of such an ordinance to be sent to a Public Hearing at the January 3, 2023 Board meeting. The ordinance details the affected personal property surplus to be considered for a 25% refund this tax year.  The Middlesex County Treasurer and Commissioner of Revenue are working with the County Administration to ensure this refund is implemented properly.  Interested Taxpayers should note:Personal property tax bills must be paid on or before February 6th to receive a refund.  The only exception would be cases where there was an error on the tax bill, and it was no fault of the taxpayer. The Treasurer’s office will be responsible for calculating and issuing the refund.  The refund will be based solely on the amount of taxes on applicable, qualifying vehicles.Refunds will be issued after February 6th in cases where taxes have been paid in full by the deadline.  Once the ordinance is enacted, taxpayers may pay their bills in person at the Treasurer’s office and the refund will be calculated at that time and discounted from the amount due.If a taxpayer owes back taxes on personal property, the refund will first be used to settle back taxes owed.
